Giovanni Pagnotta\u2019s sleek and innovative carbon fiber furniture is constantly evolving. Drawing on his time spent at Parson\u2019s getting a BFA in Design, and at Yale \u00a0in the MArch program, his pieces contain the clean lines and fastidious execution evident in someone well versed in architecture and design. His understanding of carbon fiber allows him to engineer each piece, utilizing the material\u2019s inherent strength. The results are seamless, curved, and incredibly light works of usable art. Each piece is hand made one at a time in the US, taking anywhere from 40 to 75 hours from beginning to end, depending on the design. How did you begin working with carbon fiber, what drew you to it as a material for furniture?<\/strong><\/div>\n

I\u2019ve always been motivated by interesting materials, and how they can influence design. As I\u2019ve stated in the past carbon fiber is a super material, and its specific strength to weight ratios allows you to warp the rules of physics \u2013 for example, impossibly thin cross sections and super light solutions.<\/div>\n

What fabrication issues or benefits have you come across in using this material?<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Very difficult to get near perfect surface finishes. \u00a0Although I have mastered it, it was an expensive and time consuming learning curve. Once you know what your doing, you stay ahead of the problems. I\u2019ve seen many pretenders in the world of carbon fiber, and I can confidently say I\u2019ve yet to see someone who does it technically better than I do.<\/div>\n

What do your clients say about the function and aesthetics of carbon fiber?<\/strong><\/div>\n

It is a process of educating clients about the material, most have never seen it or even heard of it \u2013 unless they are automotive or aviation enthusiasts. Once you show them and take them through the process, most become very excited. It\u2019s an exotic material, and not for everyone.<\/div>\n
