Mind Zone Exhibition Pavilion was designed by Zaha Hadid Architects for the UK\u2019s Millennium Dome back in 2000. Zaha is a consistant proponent of advanced material experimentation, and this somewhat early example is no exception. The facade glows with the use of a new panel system, a colored, translucent FRP panel sandwiching an aluminium honeycomb inner layer. I am now on the hunt for later examples of this combination in architecture, as it seems to be a provocative take on the more typical balsa core between layers of FRP.<\/p>\n<p>From the architect\u2019s website:<br \/>\n\u201cThe design strategy avoids being overtly pedagogical and is rather interactive and thought provoking. It was because of this underlying premise that artists were proposed as the main\u00a0exhibitors. Structurally the exhibit integrates the content with the usage of evolutionary materials. Its materiality is focused on the\u00a0synthetic, the mind made materials of the present. The brief to create a continuous floor \/ wall \/ soffit has produced a unique lightweight transparent panel made from glass fiber skins with an aluminium honeycomb structure.
